Hiring Moving Companies- Here’s What You Should Know

The process of moving, whether to a new home or office, is already a stressful process on its own. When you factor in the fact that there’s always a chance that you could hire a second-rate mover, the moving process becomes even more time-consuming and laborious. Luckily, we’ve compiled a few questions to consider before hiring movers, to ensure you can master the process as seamlessly as possible.

What’s the estimated cost: Be sure to ask the moving company what their rate is, because most companies will provide a rate per pound and a distance rate. If the company offers a cost based on cubic feet, be cautious because an estimated cost is often based on weight if you’re moving long distances. Remember that the moving company must provide you with a written estimated cost which should include all charges, and you and the mover must sign an agreement.

Are there additional fees: Ensure if there are any additional fees. Some companies will charge extra for unconventional items, if the destination has difficult access, or if the load has to be hand delivered over a certain distance. To avoid additional costs, mark larger items and pre-arrange where the truck can park, if the destination has easy access. This is also effective if you are moving into an apartment or condo with obstructions, such as elevator usage and load restrictions.

Ask about subcontractors: Some larger moving companies may subcontract smaller companies to help you with moving. If this is the case, ask for the subcontractor’s name. If they are uncertain about this or withhold this information, you should find another mover. 

Check if there are additional transfers: For long distance movers, they may transfer your belongings from one truck to another. Additional transfers will result in the possibility of damage or loss of your items. Remember this when you are choosing your moving company and ask beforehand. 

Ask about insurance: Ask detailed questions about insurance. Often, insurance is provided at an additional cost and is based on weight. As a result, you should assess the value of your goods versus what the insurance policy will provide if your belongings are harmed, or do not arrive at the location. 

Look into packing or storage services: Make sure that items are protected and labelled. Most companies will shrink wrap sofas and provide a free blanket wrap service. Smaller companies may charge for this service. Ask how your items will be labelled and how they will be identified upon arrival. Keep a list of boxes, single pieces, odds and ends.
